I do have one issue: why is it always the good girl who falls for the bad boy? Yes, the bad boy changes a bit, but it always seems to be the good girl who dates the guy she knows she shouldn't. But, as a Facebook user and techie, I liked it. It is funny that he used Facebook with high school students though because I think Facebook is becoming more of a thing for twenty-somethings and older. I also liked that the author incorporated social media, which makes the book feel very now. ![]() Omar T-Diddy Smalls has the swagger that comes with his exalted status. He Said, She Said is a fun and fresh novel from Kwame Alexander that throws these two high school seniors together when they unexpectedly end up leading the biggest social protest this side of the Mississippiwith a lot of help from Facebook and Twitter. And, it definitely pointed out the contrast between Omar's chapters and Claudia's chapters. A star high school quarterback bets he can get the attention of a girl who claims not to be interested by leading a protest for a cause she champions. I'll confess that Omar's dialect took a few pages to get used to it, but once I did I liked that the author wrote it this way so that I felt like I could really "hear" how Omar and his friends talked. His other works include SURFS UP, a picture book BOOKED, a middle grade novel and He Said She Said, a YA novel. Omar and Claudia were good narrators for this purpose. I like books that alternate chapters so that the reader gets the story from different characters' perspectives. ![]() ![]() ![]() I had always longed to create a Christian inspirational series, but became stymied in the face of what the series should be about. ![]() What if this extravagant moment began with the humble beginnings of a "down-and-out" woman, trying to care for her daughter, and her boss, a benefactor not too unlike the story of Ruth and Boaz….? ![]() What led that couple to this moment in time? The bride shook her hair free, and the groom reached up and stroked her cheek the moment was a tender, loving exchange as one of the bride’s attendants, fortunately, reached up to catch the veil… The bride and groom stood facing one another beneath a cloudless sky, with boats drifting past, waves lapping the shore not far away…and a soft gust of wind lifted the bride’s veil, and pulled it free of her hair. It talks about holding oneself together and never forgetting where one comes from. It conveys the importance of taking risks and facing loss. The poem then can be seen as a life lesson of sorts. Life is a set of contradictions and one must overcome them to truly become, what Kipling refers to “a Man.” The contradictions vary from keeping one’s calm during a stressful situation to abstract concepts like dreams and their power over an individual’s life. Kipling uses a series of paradoxes to convey a fairly simple message to his son. ![]() Ironically, though inspired by the actions of a failed military raid, the poem in its entirety talks about being a ‘virtuous man.’ The poem, first published in Rewards and Fairies (1910), is written in the form of paternal advice to the poet’s son, John. One of his most quoted works, Rudyard Kipling’s ‘If’ was written as a tribute to Leander Starr Jameson. ![]() ![]() Hey Guys! Please note: I don't send out ARCs for review.
